Taylor’s College CXP Charity Run Raises Rm25,000 for Long Term Tutoring Project


The Taylor’s College Classroom Xperience (CXP) Charity Run 2016 raised RM25,000 in funds that will benefit the CXP’s long term tutoring project for underprivileged children. Pro-ceeds from the run this year will be channelled to provide fun-filled education and outdoor activities for children of Rumah Ozanam, an underprivileged children home run by the Na-tional Society of St Vincent de Paul.

The run held on 23 April 2016 at Taylor's University Lakeside Campus was wholly organised by Taylor's College Subang Jaya students. Featuring the categories of 3km fun run, 5km run and 12km run, the event saw the participation of more than 900 runners including about 17 children from Rumah Ozanam.

The 'Classroom Xperience' is a unique programme initiated and developed by the students of Taylor's College Subang Jaya with the motto of 'REACH AS WE TEACH'. Inspired by the Classroom Mumbai project by the Akanksha foundation, CXP was first mooted in 2013 with the aim of providing underprivileged children with holistic education.

"I commend the students on their hard work and their achievement in attracting 950 runners for the 'CXP Run'. The proceeds from this run will enable as many as 30 underprivileged children to benefit from collaborative learning experiences. I am glad to see the students wholeheartedly embracing this opportunity to execute activities that can benefit others and the community. This is in line with the holistic education that Taylor's College provides, whereby students have diverse opportunities to hone real-world skills such as leadership, planning, teamwork and event organisation," said Craig Sherrin, President, Taylor's College.

The funding of the long-term Classroom Xperience tutoring project is important for students to be constantly engaged with the underprivileged children. Students involved in the project prepare tutoring modules covering seven semesters of work, for the children from the home to learn soft skills and performing arts; participate in sports and excursions; and enhance their learning skills.

"We are very excited to have met our target this year despite some challenges in juggling our exam schedules and CXP commitments. We look forward to bring a better learning experience for the children to discover education curriculums that are fun and creative. As students we are happy to be given the opportunity as well as the flexibility to develop a platform to reach out to teach, and at the same time, promote awareness on the importance of holistic education for underprivileged children," said Cheing Jin Han, Organising Chairperson for CXP 2016.
 

The CXP programme participants are deeply committed to the cause of educating the un-derprivileged and sharing their knowledge and experiences, as they believe it will not only benefit the children but also allow the college students themselves to achieve personal growth and greater self-awareness as well as interpersonal understanding.

“The CXP is one of the ways how we provide Taylor’s College students with a holistic educa-tion with a difference. We don’t just focus on academic excellence but also encourage them to participate in extra-curricular programmes such as the CXP. By running the CXP pro-gramme, our students can hone their leadership skills and life skills. This reflects Taylor’s College’s aim of educating students who will step up to take charge and make a difference where they can, and be members of society who help others achieve a better life,” added Mr Sherrin.

The CXP classroom project 2016 batch has kicked off their 6 months semesters since January 2016, and a graduation will be held on August 2016 involving more than 50 student volunteers from Taylor's College.
