What is South Australian Matriculation (SAM) or SACE International?

What is SACE International?

South Australian Certificate of Education, also known as SACE International is an internationally recognised pre-university programme that is equivalent to the Year 12 Australian high school course. This programme comprises of 70% college-based assessment and 30% final examination marked in Australia.

Previously known as the South Australian Matriculation (SAM) programme, SACE International programme is a gateway for students to enter top universities around the world including Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, India, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the US.

The SAM/SACE International programme at Taylor’s continues to be the largest centre for Australian Pre-University programmes in Malaysia since its inception in 1982.

Difference between AUSMAT and SAM/SACE International

Both of these pre-university programmes are based on the Australian education system and both incorporate a combination of coursework and final exams which ultimately leads to an Australian Year 12 qualification.

The South Australian Matriculation (SAM) or SACE International is administered by the SACE Board of South Australia, a statutory authority of the South Australian Government. SAM students will be assessed and graded based on 70% college-based assessment (coursework) and 30% final examination.

The difference between SAM/SACE International and The Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) is that AUSMAT is administered by the School Curriculum and Standards Authority of Western Australia, a statutory authority of the Western Australian Government. Unlike SAM, those studying AUSMAT will be assessed and graded based on 50% coursework and 50% examination.

International Recognition:

The SAM/SACE International qualification is internationally recognized by top universities in the world. Students will be accredited with the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) upon successful completion. These awards are recognized within the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), and our SAM/SACE International students have successfully gained admission into top universities in countries including Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, the US and many others.

Examination structure:

Our SACE International programme follows a linear structure, where the minimum subject requirement is 5 and the maximum is 6 throughout the entire programme duration. As this programme offers 70% college-based assessment and 30% external assessment, students will learn to manage continuous assessments from the 5-6 chosen subjects. The college-based assessment is sent to the SACE Board of South Australia for moderation at the end of the examination. While each subject’s continuous assessment can contribute to up to 70% of their total grade, students must be consistent with their work without neglecting the 30% of the final examination.

All assessments and grades are converted into the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) at the end of the programme.

What is ATAR?

The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score is calculated based on the student’s results at the end of the programme. This score is calculated based on the four highest scoring subjects, and 50% from the 5th highest scoring subject.

As ATAR is a rank and not a mark; it provides a measure of a student's overall academic achievement as compared to his or her peers. This means that the student’s overall percentage from the five subjects will be used to show his or her ranking relative to others. For example, an ATAR of 90 means you performed better than 90% of your peers who took this programme.
